Delicate, buttery Spritz Cookies with festive variations, make a perfect adornment for a Christmas cookie tray. You can add food coloring or leave plain – either way, these cookies are delicious and beautiful. You will need a cookie press to make Spritz cookies. This is one of the very first Christmas cookies I learned to make as a young girl, and it took a little practice to master the cookie press. Once I did, I don’t think a Christmas has passed where we didn’t have festive Spritz Butter Cookies in the house! These keep very well in an airtight container and make a lovely gift.
Begin by combining softened butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and beat until combined. Add egg, vanilla, and salt and continue beating until thoroughly combined. Add the flour and mix only until dough comes together and is combined. Do not overmix. If desired, color the cookie dough and mix in color by hand. If the dough seems too soft for the cookie press, cover and refrigerate for 30 to 45 minutes.
Bake 6 – 8 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
